Here’s where the sources get a little tricky to interpret, based on the customs of the time. In 1851, Grace appeared in her father’s household, listed as a widow with three children. She might truly have been a widow. But it was also a common enough practice at the time for an abandoned wife to claim she was widowed. In 1853, Grace had another child, Matilda. This might mean her estranged husband came back and reconciled; or, it might mean she hd a relationship with someone she didn’t marry, and her child received Grace’s current last name.
In 1855, Grace married Jabez Booth. The couple had two children: Elizabeth and Bethuel. Although Grace is listed as a widow again in 1871, it appears that her second husband might have abandoned her. Of the current death records digitized and catalogued so far, there is no record for a Jabez Booth dying between 1861 and 1871. There are two or three Jabez Booths in later censuses, but the earliest death certificate comes from the 1880s.
Grace continued to live as a widow—whether she technically was or not—until her death in 1885. At the time, at least one child, Elizabeth, was living in her household with her. She also had one grandchild present in the household, William Henry Kaye. It is unclear whose child he was, but he lived in his grandmother’s house from a very early age onward. After his grandmother’s death, he continued to live with his aunt Elizabeth, at least until 1891.
