Biography

James Simpson, son of James Simpson and Agnes "Nancy" Woodside, was born in 1807. [1] [2]

James Simpson and Janet Annie Clark married on 1 Feb 1837. [3] They lived in Bayview, Queens, Prince Edward Island.

At Shipyard Field, among other pursuits, "James built ships and there is a record of the launching of The Eliza, a 207 ton barque from this yard." "James Simpson had established himself as a shipbuilder, miller, merchant, and exporter. He carried on his business in connection with the Cunard Steamship Company, exporting the product of his mills - flour, oatmeal, and pearl barley - and importing British goods which he sold in his store to the farmers for their produce. Such a medium of exchange was a necessity, and the business prospered till the financial depression which tested the foundations of British commerce swept over the empire. Shipbuilding was suspended, and export trade was threatened with extinction. James Simpson sold his business and with part of the proceeds bought a farm in Western Ontario". This was in 1847. [4]

By 1861 they lived in Gore, Kent, Chatham township, Canada West. [5] They remained in Chatham in 1871, 1881 and 1891. [6] [7] James died 21 Apr 1891 and was buried in McVicar Cemetery, Darrell, Chatham-Kent Municipality, Ontario. [8]
