Biography

This profile is part of the Skinner Name Study.

Cortland Skinner[1][2][3][4] was born on the 26th of January 1771 in Rowan County, North Carolina.[citation needed] In 1791, at the age of twenty, he married Hannah Reed.[1][5] This blessed event took place in Rowan County.[1][5] The following year Kentucky was established as a state.[6]

Cortland and Hannah lived in Madison County, Kentucky at the turn of the century.[7] Census records are not available for that year but tax lists show that Madison County was where he resided.[7] In 1808 the section of Madison County that he lived in was combined with land from Clark County to form Estill County, Kentucky.[6] The 1810 census taken in Estill County shows Cortland with his wife and seven children.[2] Unfortunately only the names of the Head of Household were recorded before 1850.

Cortland was forty-nine years old in 1820 and living in Ravenna, in Estill County.[3] Hannah was age forty-five and stayed at home to tend to their ten children. No occupation was listed for Cortland but he was most likely engaged in Agriculture. The remote county of Estill had a population of 3,507.[6]

The 1830 census was the final one to list Cortland.[4] Still living in Estill County his household size was ten (1 male 5-9, 1 male 50-59, 1 female under 5, 3 females 5-9, 3 females 10-14 and one female 40-49).[4] Cortland would have been fifty-nine years old, his wife Hannah fifty-five. The Estill Steam Iron Ore Furnace was erected that year.[6] The first brick Court House was also erected in 1830.[6]

Cortland died at some point after the 1830 census was taken. His wife Hannah lived on for another twenty plus years.[8]

Husband: Cortland Skinner
Wife: Hannah Reed
Married: 18 Jun 1793 Rowan County, North Carolina, USA[1][5]
Children:
  1. Kizariah "Keziah" "Kissie" (Skinner) Richardson[9]
  2. Edith Jane "Eady" (Skinner) Lakes[10]
Note: Cortland and Hannah had at least ten children together. Possible other children are Simeon, Cortland, James, Medad, Joseph, Hannah, Reuben, Nancy, Marian and Jane. Records would need to be found to verify they were children of Cortland.

Research Notes

  • The marriage bond for Cortland and Hannah is a bond between "Cortlin Skinner & Madad Reed" but it does not say Madad is the father of the bride.
  • The 1790 and 1800 census records for the state of Kentucky no longer exist. However, there are still published tax records from that time available. They can fill in a lot of the missing census information for researchers.(per Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness)
  • The 1840 census for Hannah is needed. I looked through 'Not Stated, Estill, Kentucky' census records and didn't find Hannah Skinner or the Akers family she was with in 1850. There were other family names on the census (White, Edge, Richardson, Estes, Lutes and Rose). On image 51/62 there is a Wm Skinner with 7 people in his home. On image 53 of 62 there is a Henry Skinner with 9 people in his home.(Silva-1055 01:26, 29 January 2019 (UTC))

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Cortland by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Cortland:

Cortland Skinner is attached to a mother with a well-sourced profile, (Elizabeth Cutter) which clearly shows Elizabeth Cutter only had daughters with husband John Skinner. This particular John Skinner, who is also well-sourced, mentions these daughters by name in his will. No sons are mentioned at all. John Skinner died in 1748. Can we get Cortland Skinner un-attached to this particular couple? He must have been added inadvertently through a merge.

Has there been more resolution on the details for this person? It shows that he is married to Hannah Reed, the same person his brother Cortland married. Also, I believe the marriage to Elizabeth Lawson was by Cortland Skinner Jr.

Skinner-4197 and Skinner-1171 appear to represent the same person because: Eady Skinner - is listed as a child of Skinner-1171 in the sources. Eady is the child of Skinner-4197 with the mother, Hannah Reed. That is the reason I proposed the merge - the source for Skinner-1171 names Eady as a child.

The name "Arthur" may be incorrect - that can be fixed during the merge. But 1171 and 4197 are the same person.

Skinner-4197 and Skinner-1171 do not represent the same person because: I believe the Arthur Courtland McGregor Skinner is from the BG Courtlandt Skinner branch. My research shows: Thomas /Skinner/

1617 - 1703 Chitchester, Sussex, England - Malden, Middlesex, MA

Abraham /Skinner/ 1649 - 1698 Chitchester, Sussex, England - Malden, Middlesex, MA

Thomas /Skinner/ 11 Dec 1670 - 1 jun 1737 NJ NJ

John /Skinner/ 16 Jun 1714 - 2 May 1751 Woburn, Middlesex, NY - Medford, Middlesex, NJ

John Lloyd Owen /Skinner/ 1 Mar 1737 - 1787 Woodbury, Middlesex, NJ - Estill County, KY

Cortland /Skinner/ 26 Jan 1771 - 1840 NJ - Estill County, Kentucky
