Came over on the ship “Philip” and settled in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. they were indentured servants to Sir George, Gov. Phillip Carteret and Lady Carteret. They married May 1, 1666 by T. Ballen, S’cy of the Providence of East Jersey. Richard was a carpenter (“joyer) by trade and built the first house in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey.
Richard came with Philip Cartaret, first governor of the colony of New Jersey in Aug. 1665. He was one of the first settlers in Elizabeth Town, New Jersey.
When Richard came, on the same ship was a girl named Susanna Poulain. She was born in St. Germain-en-Laye Seine-et-Oise, France. She was one of five maids brought over for Governor’s wife, who wanted five French maids.
As a “joyner”, Richard made fine furniture which came to the attention of a Mr. Balthazar deHart of New York City who made a deal with Gov. Cataret to let him work for DeHart. Within two years, Richard was a land owner in Essex County, New Jersey and had some responsibilities for overseeing the governor’s business affairs.
