Biography

Ann Matilda Slatter was born, probably in 1876, at Maugersbury (near Stow on the Wold), Gloucestershire, England. She was baptised at the parish church of Shipton under Wychwood in Oxfordshire on 24 September 1876, as the daughter of Solomon and Emma Slatter, of Maugersbury, Gloucestershire. Her father was described as a labourer. [1] [2] [3] (Shipton under Wychwood was her mother's birthplace.)

In the 1881 census Ann M. Slatter was living in Kiddington, Oxfordshire, England, with her parents Solomon and Emma and her sister Sarah Jane. Her age was given as 4, implying a birth date in 1876 or 1877. Her birthplace was given as ”Mausbury”, Gloucestershire. [2]

In 1891 Annie Slater was living at Farmington near Stow on the Wold in Gloucestershire, with her parents and a married visitor called Sarah Monk. Her age was given as 14, implying a birth date in 1876 or 1877. Her birthplace was given as Maugersbury, Gloucestershire. [3]

In 1901 Annie M. Slatter was living at "Highlands" in the hamlet of Pinfarthing in the parish of Nailsworth in Gloucestershire, where she was employed as a domestic housemaid. Her age was given as 24, implying a birth date in 1876 or 1877. Her birthplace was given as Stow on the Wold, Gloucestershire. [4]

Research Notes

If her birth was registered, it has proved hard to identify, which is surprising at that date.

According to her parents' entry in the 1911 census, both Ann and her sister Sarah were still living in 1911.
