Father Slayton came to Iowa in March, 1875. He was 81 years and 3 months old when he died." [2] [3]
Charles was born on 24 November 1798 in Chester, Hampshire County, Massachusetts, (now Hampden County). [4]2 He was listed in the household of Asa Slayton in the 1800 Census at the age of under 10. [5] Charles apparently moved with his parents from Chester, Massachusetts to Potsdam, New York in 1815 but returned to Chester in 1817 to marry Sarah Ayres. [3]
Charles married Sarah B. Ayres on 3 February 1817 in Chester, Massachusetts. [6] she a daughter of Asa Ayres, Sr. and Mary Wait [citation needed]; born 24 Feb 1798, Chester, Hampshire Co., MA [citation needed]; she died 20 May 1834, Kirtland, Geauga Co., OH [citation needed]; buried Fairview Cemetery, Hiram Village, Portage Co., OH.[7] Sally's headstone reads: "SALLY B. wife of CHARLES SLAYTON Died May 20, 1834. Aged 36 yrs."
Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1820 Census at St. Lawrence County, New York. [8] Included in the household were 1 female 16-26, presumably his wife Sarah; 1 female and 1 male under 10, probably his children Samuel and Sarah Ann..[9]
Charles moved to Lake County, Ohio in 1825. After Sarah's death in 1834, he married Statira Champney on 17 March 1835 in Painesville, Lake County, Ohio. [1] [3]
Charles was listed as the head of family on the 1850 Census at Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio. [10] Charles was 55, born in Massachusetts, listed as a farmer. Included in the household were his son, Albert (age 14, born in Ohio), and his grandaughter Sarah (age 8, born in New York), the daughter of his son Samuel Vernon. [3] Charles' second wife Statira was not listed (although she did not die until 1872). Listed as head of a separate family in the same dwelling was his son, Charles Franklin, with his wife and son. Also in the same house were Roxanne Tinkham (51,NY), mother of his son, Charles Franklin's wife Amelia; Amelia's brother William (26,OH), and her aunt (mother's sister) Sophia Wait (38, NY).
Charles received a Land Grant of 120 acres in the E1/2 NE1/4 and the NE1/4 SW1/4 S24 T86N R22W in the district of lands subject to sale at Fort Dodge, Iowa on 10 April 1860 for his service in the War of 1812. He served as private (age 18) in Capt. Murvin's Co, Massachusetts militia. Subsequently Charles assigned the Grant to Charles Slayton (presumably his son, Charles Franklin Slayton). He moved to Iowa in March, 1875. [11] [3]
Charles was listed as the head of a family on the 1860 Census at Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio. [12] He was 65, born in NY, listed as a farmer with $500 property. Included in the household were his sons; Charles Franklin (36,NY) and Albert Warren (23,OH); his grandson Stephen (11,OH); and Charles Franklin's wife, Amelia Sophia (34,OH).[3]
Charles died on 23 February 1876 in Hardin County, Iowa, at age 77. [1] He was buried in the Union Cemetery at Iowa Falls, Hardin Twp., Hardin County, Iowa. :[13]
