Biography

Clara was born on 28 November 1891 in Hartshorne, Derbyshire.[1][2]She was the second child and eldest daughter of William Smith and Minnie Mackellow.

Sadly, just over one year later on 27 January 1893, Clara passed away having suffered from Measles & Bronchitis.[3][4]

Clara was buried in nearby Blackfordby on 30 January 1893.[5]

Both the birth and death certificates refer to "Burton Road, Hartshorne". There is no road of that name in the village today, but may be the A511 (also known locally as the old A50) which is the main road from Ashby to Burton running near but not through Hartshorne. There is a village on the road known as Boundary which other certificates and census returns for this family refer to.

I have yet to find any of the Smith children's baptisms. Wilkins-1208 12:21, 28 December 2016 (EST)

Useful info:

Grandma Dot always said she was one of nine children, so I was really surprised to find on the 1911 census that there were 10 children born to William and Minnie, but that one had passed away.

With the very common name of Smith, the fact that the family lived on the borders of Derbyshire and Leicestershire (with Staffordshire only a stones throw away) I was unable to locate the missing child for a number of years.

However, with the release of the GRO indexes allowing the search of births pre-1911 with the mothers maiden name, I found Clara in a single evening. It must be said that this was helped by Minnie's unusual (for that area) maiden name of Mackellow.

Clara may have been named after her mother's sister - the eldest of the Mackellow's to move to Leicestershire and looked after the family after their mother's death.

  • Clara's birth wasn't registered within the required 42 days (6 weeks) timeframe, even if Christmas and New Year are considered: 28 Nov - 18 Jan.
  • The date of birth given of 28 November 1891 means that when she died on 27 Jan 1893 she had lived only 14 months, not the stated 15.
