Archelaus Smith Museum
The museum and historical society named in honour of the early New England settler Archelaus Smith, were formed in 1970 to preserve the history and culture of Cape Sable Island. The ground floor of the museum, which is located in a municipally-registered heritage building, has a display of fishing techniques and gear, models of the Cape Island boat, specimens of sea life, artifacts from shipwrecks, and marine paintings. Upstairs contains a collection of items related to domestic life (quilts, toys, cradles, clothing, etc.) and such non-fishing trades as carpentry and shoe-making.

Archelaus Smith (23 April 1734 - 3 April 1821), was a tanner, shoemaker and early settler of Barrington, Nova Scotia. He was born in Chatham, Massachusetts to parents Deacon Stephen Smith (c.1706-1766) and Bathsheba (Brown) Smith (1709–1766). He was christened in the Congregational Church, Chatham, Massachusetts on 23 Apr 1734. At eighteen years of age he married Elizabeth Nickerson (1735–1828), daughter of William Nickerson (1701–1763) and Sarah (Covell) Nickerson (c.1706-b.1790), in Chatham, in a ceremony performed by the Reverend Stephen Emery. They had eight children (three boys and five girls). Archelaus was born in 1734. Archelaus Smith passed away in 1819.Wilbur-403 07:38, 11 January 2016 (EST)
