Biography

John was born in 1818. He was the son of John Smith and Jane Jones. He passed away in 1871.[1]

John Smith was born in Bidston, Cheshire, England, on September 23, 1818. He was the third of seven children born to John and Jane Smith. His sister and brothers are:

Ann 24 May 1812 William 8 Oct 1829 Thomas 28 May 1814 Sarah 13 Aug 1827 Richard 9 Jun 1817 Robert 10 Jan 1830 John A. * 23 Sep1818

John was a commoner and a stonecutter and mason by trade. He met Mary Heathman in Oxten, Cheshire, England. Mary and John were married on April 29, 1840, in a little church called “Wood Church”. It was part of the Protestant Church, the official Church of England. Mary and John had ten children, five boys and five girls all of whom were born in Oxten, England. Their children are:

Julia 3 Sept 1842 Mary Ann 4 Jan 1853 Mary Ann 1843-1847 Joseph Heathman 4 Jan 1855 Isaac 17 Sept 1845 Elizabeth Jane* 2 Feb 1857 Thomas 27 Oct 1848 John Henry 27 Feb 1859 William George 28 Oct 1850 Matilda Ann 27 May 1860

Their second daughter died in infancy and was buried in Wood Church Parish, Oxten England. Mary and John joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1850, the year their fifth child was born.

In 1861 John immigrated to America and arrived in Salt Lake City, Utah in September of that year. He went ahead to prepare a home for Mary and the children. Mary worked as a nurse in England helping to earn money for her and the children’s voyage to join John in Utah.

John’s skills as a stone-cutter lead him to be a worker on the building of the Salt Lake City Latter-day Saint Temple. It took John and Mary a year of hard work to earn enough money for Mary and the children to come to America. They left England in May of 1862 and arrived in Salt Lake City in October of 1862 after five months of travel over the Atlantic Ocean, and the plains and deserts of the west.

John had started to build a house and had the basement finished so Mary and the children had a place to live once they arrived in the Utah Territory. The house was on South Temple near where the Lion House is located. They lived in this house until the spring of 1864 when they moved to Huntsville, Utah. They were assigned by President Brigham Young to help settle the valley.

After settling in Huntsville, John did mason work. He helped construct the first schoolhouse in Huntsville, the walls were made of sand stone and the lumber was from the local sawmill. John made several of the old head stones in the Huntsville cemetery. He also did stone cutting and mason work on some of the early buildings in Ogden, Utah. He had the foresight to secure a couple of farms while they were cheap. He framed and milked a small herd of cows. Mary started her practice as nurse and midwife.

One time John was out in the field when a bear attacked him. He had a large chuck of flesh torn from his tight. They feared he would bleed to death. Mary took needle and thread and sewed the flesh back on. It healed without infection.

In the latter part of the eighteen sixties something took place to upset the family of John A. Smith and his wife Mary. John made known his desire to take a second wife. This made Mary was so unhappy she told her husband in no uncertain terms she would not she consent to have this happen. Not only did she blame her husband, but she also blamed the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She discontinued her support of the church and stopped having her children baptized. The last five children of the family were not baptized in their childhood.

John A. Smith died February 29, 1871, at the age of fifty-three just ten years after leaving England. It was thought his trade on stonemason contributed to his death. Possibly the rock dust from chiseling and pounding rock over the years damaged his lungs. He is buried in the Huntsville cemetery. Mary lived for another twenty-four years with out her beloved husband. She was seventy-seven years old when she died on December 16, 1895. One of her last request was to follow an old English custom where the wife and husband were buried in the same grave spot. This request was granted and Mary was buried in the same grave as her husband John.
