Biography

Liverpool to New York 6 May 1862 - 12 Jun 1862 A Compilation of General Voyage Notes "DEPARTURES. -- On the 6th instant the packet ship Manchester, Captain Trask, sailed with 376 souls of the Saints on board, under the presidency of Elder John D. T. McAllister, with Elders Samuel L. Adams and Mark Barnes as his counselors. Elder McAllister arrived in this country from the United States, where he had been on a mission from Zion, Dec. 28th, 1861; and since Jan. 1st, 1862, has been presiding over the Birmingham Conference. Elder Adams arrived from Zion July 27th, 1860, and has been laboring as president of the Warwickshire Conference. These brethren have labored with success while upon their missions, and carry with them the blessings of the presidency here and the prayers of the Saints who have been blessed under their ministration. Elder Barnes, late president of the Dorset Conference, has labored diligently in the ministry in these lands for a number of years; and in conjunction with Elders George Reed, late president of Reading Conference, George Burgon, late traveling elder in the Southampton Conference, and David Neilson, late traveling elder in the Kent Conference, who left with this company, felt grateful to God for the privilege of gathering with the Saints under the blessings of the presidency here. On Tuesday evening Presidents Lyman, Rich, and Cannon held a meeting on board, delivered addresses to the Saints, and organized the company. It was a cheering sight to look upon the joyful countenances of the Saints radiant with happiness and bright anticipation, while they appeared to have a fair idea of the trying circumstances they would be called to pass through on their homeward journey. Peace, unanimity, and goodwill prevailed among them, and the Spirit of God was richly enjoyed by them. A neater and more respectable looking company of emigrants has rarely, if ever, left these shores. When the presidency gave them their parting blessing, and prayed that they might have a safe and prosperous voyage and journey, all felt that the blessings and prayers would be realized in their fulfilment by the Saints on whose behalf they were uttered. May the blessings of the Lord be upon them and round about them, that they may be prospered in their journeyings and reach their destination in peace and safety." MS, 24:20 (May 17, 1862), p.315

"Tues. 6. [May 1862] -- The ship Manchester sailed from Liverpool, with 376 Saints, under the direction of John D. T. McAllister; it arrived at New York June 12th." CC, p.67

We waited three weeks to let the weary oxen rest up for there [their] return journey and then we started over the prairies in July. We experienced no trouble on the plains with Indians. The men who night herded the cattle used to hunt in the daytimes and often they would kill buffalo and deer for the camp. "When we camped by streams we used to catch suckers and trout to eat. Edward Rushton was our teamster. Besides my parents those in our family were my brothers Isaac, Thomas, Joseph and John and my sisters Julia, Mary Ann, Elizabeth Jane and Mathilda Ann. We slept in a tent at night on the plains.

"When we got to South Pass where the elevation is about 8000 feet above sea level in the mountains of Wyoming the nights were very cold and snow fell, as it was getting late in the autumn. We arrived in Salt Lake City October 10, 1862.
