Biography

William was the son of William Smith and Elizabeth Schenckingh, who married sometime after 1690 in the Province of Carolina.[1]He and his brother John inherited an undivided share of their father's plantation on Charleston Neck. A division of the plantation was later made between their heirs in February 1760.[2]

He married Elizabeth Williamson, daughter of John Williamson and his wife Phoebe, and they had children:[1]

  • Elizabeth (m. Nicholas Burnham)
  • Mary (b. 1724, d. young)
  • Sarah (d. young)
  • Rebecca (b. 1731, m. Paul Douxsaint)
  • Margaret (m. Thomas Evance)

William Smith of Charles Town, planter, made his Will 30 December 1741, and it was recorded 1 February 1741/2. He mentions his mother Elizabeth Smith, his wife Elizabeth Smith, and his five daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Sarah, Rebecca, and Margaret. His eldest daughter Elizabeth is shortly to be married to Nicholas Burnham. He names as executors his wife, his brothers [in-law] Peter Taylor and Thomas Dale, and friends and relatives William Elliott and John Stanyarne.[3]

He was buried 15 January 1741/2 at St. Philips Church, Charles Town.[4]
