Biography

William Smith arrived in the Province of Carolina from Barbados about 1690. He worked as a factor, then established himself as a merchant in Charles Town. He was active in local politics, representing Berkeley and Craven counties in the Commons House of Assembly in 1695-1705 and 1707-1708. He also served in many local offices, including as sheriff of Berkeley County. In 1707 he was appointed the first secretary of the Commissioners of Indian Trade.[1]

Sometime before May 1695 he married Elizabeth Schenckingh, daughter of Bernard Schenckingh and widow of Thomas Smith (d. 1690).[2] They had children Benjamin (d. young), William, John, Catherine (m. William Greenland), Anne (m. Thomas Dale), and Amarinthia (m. Benjamin Gibbes and Peter Taylor).[3][1]

William Smith wrote his Will 30 August 1710.[3]The Board of Indian Trade mentioned him as deceased on 20 September 1710.[1]

Research Note

William Smith was not the son of Landgrave Thomas Smith and his wife Barbara Atkins. The Landgrave Thomas Smith had only two sons, Thomas and George.
