The will of Charles Chauncy probated 28 February 1763 requested two of his grandsons, William Snell and Charles Snell, sons of Martha, to take the name of Chauncy.
William Snell of Edmonton was granted license in accordance with the will of his late grandfather Charles Chauncy late of Newington to add Chauncy to his name in 1780.
The London Gazette published 12 December 1780 contained the following
At the Court at St. James's December 16
The King has been pleased to grant unto William Snell, of Edmonton in the County of Middlesex, Esq; (pursuant to the Will of his Grandfather, Charles Chauncy, late of Newington in the same County, Gentleman, deceased) His Royal Licence and Authority to assume and take the Surname of Chauncy, and to use the Names of William Snell Chauncy, and also to bear the Arms of Chauncy with his own Arms, such Arms being first duly exemplified according to the Laws of Arms, and recorded in the Heralds Office ; and also to order, that this His Majesty's Concession and Declaration be registered in His College of Arms.[1]
William married Sarah Toulmin on 6 June 1783 in St. Margaret's, Westminster, London, England.[2] They had two daughters and later separated.
William died on November 17, 1829 in Berkshire, England, United Kingdom, aged 72. William was buried on 1 December 1829 in All Saints, Edmonton, Enfield, England.[3]
From the Hampshire Chronicle Hampshire, England, 30 Nov 1829:
Died, last week, at his house, Winkfield, Berks, William Snell Chauncy, Esq. aged 74.
William's will passed probate on 26 March 1832 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury.[4]William Snell Chauncy's will was probated in Dublin, Ireland in 1833.[5]
