John Lee Snow was born on 18 February 1788 in his parents' home in Lebanon, Windham County, Connecticut, USA. He was the son of Francis Snow and Elizabeth Lee.[1]
Nothing is known of his youth. It's known that he married a Connecticut-born woman named Lucy Parker, b: ca. 1792, although no marriage record has been found. Sometime around 1820, John Lee Snow and his wife joined others of the extended Snow family in Central Connecticut making a major move west to the still-untamed frontier area that was founded as Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, in 1810. Before the fledgling United States determined that earlier New England colonial claims to western territories stretching to the Great Lakes were impractical (as New York's Hudson Valley came in-between), Connecticut Colony had claimed a stretch of territory all the way to Lake Erie, as its "Western Reserve". Many Connecticut families trekked there and all the way to North-East Ohio between 1783 and 1820. The Snows decided to stop in northern Pennsylvania. At least one Snow family was in Susquehanna County before 1810.
The first US Census record for John Snow, the subject of this profile, dates from 1830. He then was recorded as married and living in Herrick Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. His household consisted of a son & a daughter, both under 5 years old, another son and a daughter, both between 5 and 9 years old, plus himself and his wife, both 40 to 49 years old. [2] Later Census reports confirm that the subject of this profile lived in Herrick Township. Only the names of 2 of his 4 small children are known:
No 1840 Census records have been found. The 1 June 1850 US Census, recorded John Snow as 61 years old, married to Lucy (Parker)Snow, 57 years old. Both were born in Connecticut and most-likely had also married there. They were still living in Herrick Township with 2 children: daughter Laura H. Snow, now 24 years old and still single, and son "Samuel Leu Snow," 22 years old and single. In fact, "Samuel Leu Snow" was son Lemuel F. Snow, b: 1828 in Susquehanna, Pennsylvania. Interestingly, the Census states that father John Lee Snow was a "Peddler," while it was his son who was a "Farmer." His farm, where the family lived, was valued at $600 US dollars. [3] [4]
John Lee Snow was not recorded on the 1 June 1860 US Census so it can be assumed that he passed away between 1850 and 1860. His son, Lemuel Snow, married during this period and moved his farm to Ararat Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, USA. [5]
Lucy (Parker) Snow survived her husband's passing. She passed away on 4 December 1878 in Herrick Township, Susquehanna, Pennsylvania, United States. No Find A Grave Memorial has been found for either her or John Lee Snow. [6]
