Vital Records

Relevant entries appear in several New England towns--surname Sears with several variants. There are also entries about Searls and variants, but those tentatively seem unrelated.

Vital Records of Beverly

Beverly births/baptisms (date order; select entries). See Vital Records of Beverly ..., 1:290, Hathi Trust. etc.

So, the Elizabeth died 1753, was born about say 1678. IF she was the Elizabeth Cole who married William of Manchester in 1723, then that seems less likely her first marriage, but it is also possible she was a different woman, Elizabeth, who married a generation earlier to a William of Manchester.

Thank you Gene for all this information and your effort that went into it. My interest in Sears/Seers begins w/ the Mary Seers who wed *Thomas Jenkins in Boston 24 Sept. 1708. Would you like me to abandon the Alexander Sears profile as PM? No need for me to have it. Thanks again. Dave

Hi Dave Jenkins,

So, if I have this correct, Samuel P. May (1890, 565-566, and further in his personal notes) calls her Mary^3 Sears (Robert^2, Alexander^2), born in Boston, 23 March 1682[?3], baptized there 4 March 1694/5; married 24 September 1708, Thomas Jenkins.

I'm sure you have these ...

Torrey entry, 2015-2:1347, for Robert Seers m Abigail ______ has note, "Boston 158 has William [in] error," cites references as Boston 166, 176; I'll add to the free space page.

May commented on but did not ordinarily cite his sources by book and page, nor is his logic and reasoning always obvious. May's entries, with his notes, from the archival version of his personal copy:

[p. 565] https://archive.org/details/SearsGenealogy/page/n772/mode/1up?view=theater

[p.566] https://archive.org/details/SearsGenealogy/page/n776/mode/1up?view=theater

[p.566, handwritten notes] https://archive.org/details/SearsGenealogy/page/n777/mode/1up?view=theater

I hope you will stay on as a profile manager, but feel free to upgrade me, so that we are co-managers. If you decide to leave the profile, I will soldier on!

Robert's birth is recorded Salem, and I have taken particular interest in the early Sears, Seers, etc. of Essex County.

More to do!--Gene

Greetings Gene,

I was not aware of the work of Mr. Samuel P. May. Thank you. It succeeded in knocking me out of my slumber when I read his note on Mary Seers and T. Jenkins. I was working off of Charles Banks' Vol 3 (?) History of Martha's Vineyard and Thomas' parents as Peter Jenkins/ Sarah (Jones?). Was born on M.V., of Edgartown, then Gloucester, then Boston (1708) where he wed our Mary Seers and later the widow Judith (Clark) Howe in Boston in 1737. There were many Jenkins from Boston between say 1670 to 1770, so the task is a challenge, and I get the impression not too many are developed here on Wike tree. But I digress.

Certainly I'll stay with Alexander Sears Jr. Appears he led a full life and there's a lot to fill in. The Robert Seares, born in Salem, . . . died 1732 and buried in Copp's Hill's Burying Ground, Boston?

Forgot, great article in the latest NEHG Register on Judith Finne, William Woodbury, and others. D. Jenkins

posted by Dave Jenkins
Cool, and thank you for the kind words. As the article reports, Judith Finne's proven identity had been more than a decade in the making.

I don't know whether either work, Banks or May, has the Jenkins line correct, but hope collaboration on WikiTree will set the record straight. I see that Wikipedia has "Copps Hill Burying Ground" in the "North End of Boston."

As to Rebecca Rayment's husband, Joseph Sears, Samuel P. May did not publish a clear record. After noting the marriage record in an account of Joseph, born 1711 (as "2nd sheet," p. 618), May reported that Nathaniel and Rebecca (Conant) Rayment's daughter would have been Joseph's senior by almost 20 years--and then struck that identity. A series of Rayment probate records (father Nathaniel; siblings Benjamin and Elizabeth) leave little doubt as to her identity, so it seems more likely she married a Joseph Sears who was born much earlier.

Thanks again; more later.--Gene
