Biography

Susan Spencer was born on 2 Aug 1863 in Lanespark, near Killelunde, Tipperary, Ireland, to Frank and Catherine Spencer.

In early 1884, Susan and her older sister Mary emigrated to Australia.[1] According to family history, Mary was going to Australia to marry a man she knew from Ireland that had moved there, and Susan came to accompany her. One of the boat crew was William Laycock, first mate. Over the long boat trip from Liverpool England to Sydney Australia, William and Susan fell in love.

Susan married William Henry Laycock on 16 Apr 1884 in St. James Church, Sydney, Australia, immediately after arriving. They had 5 children: Margaret Agnes (1885), twins Catherine Jane and Frank Spencer (1988), William Henry (1890) and Gladys May (1893).[2]

William was lost at sea in January 1894.[3] Shortly afterwards, Susan took her children and returned to Ireland.

After returning to Ireland, Susan married James Sheppard Quin on 27 May 1896. He had children from a prior marriage (Gretta). Susan and James had 4 children: Constance Wyndham (about 1897), Stella Mary (about 1898), Amanda Grace (about 1900) and Frank Spencer (1901).[4][5]

James died sometime before 1911. In the 1911 Ireland census, Susan Quin (born about 1868) is the head of household, living with her children Gretta Quin, Constance Quin, Amanda Quin, and Francis Quin in Clonmel, Tipperary.[5]

Susan with her children from James Quin came to Canada aboard the S.S. Canada, leaving Liverpool on 21 July 1921.[6]

She returned to Ireland in 1927. Susan passed away in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland on 6 Dec 1944.[7][8]
