Biography

This profile is part of the St Helens, Lancashire One Place Study.

Richard Spencer was christened on 17 Sep 1837 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. He was the son of William and Catherine Spencer. His father's occupation was recorded as school master, and the family's address as Prescot.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Hackley Moss, Eccleston, with Richard's maternal grandmother, who was of independent means. Richard's father was a schoolmaster.

Richard's father died in 1841, and was buried on 31 Jul 1841 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. His age was recorded as 31, and his address as Eccleston.

Richard's mother married Edward Saggerson on 16 Feb 1847 at St Helens Chapel of Ease in the parish of Prescot, Lancashire.

Richard's mother died in 1848, and was buried on 4 Aug 1848 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. Her age was recorded as 38, and her address as Prescot.

By March 30th 1851, Richard and his younger sister Mary Elizabeth were living in Hillock Street, Prescot with their stepfather Edward Saggerson (a file manufacturer with 3 apprentices). Edward's niece Ellen Mawdsley was also in the household.
