Biography

Lawrence was born about 1647.

Disputed Origins

A previous version of this profile claimed he was the Lawrence Springer born 6 Jan 1647 in Barbados, son of John and Margaret Springer. There is such a record,[1] but no evidence that the Barbados-born Lawrence ended up in Rhode Island.
In 1881, a genealogy was published claiming that the Rhode Island Lawrence Springer was son of Christopher Springer, exchequer in Sweden, and one of three brothers who settled in different parts of North America, and all descending from European nobility.[2] This work was closely analyzed and debunked by Milton Rubincam in 1941.[3] While Christopher Springer of Sweden did have three sons, including a Lorentz, and one of them (Carl) emigrated to North America, there is no evidence that Christopher's son Lorentz left Sweden.

Records in Rhode Island

On 8 May 1679, Thomas Hicks sold a quarter share at Seaconnet to a Lawrence Springer, for £22, 10s.[4] Note: Austin cites no sources for this information, and there are no other references to Springer in the book. Martha Hicks (supposed wife of Lawrence Springer) is not a daughter of Thomas Hicks per the same source.

A Lawrence Springer married Martha ______ in 1684 at Little Compton, Rhode Island.[5] Profile for Martha (Hicks) Springer (abt.1648-abt.1703).

Death

One source says he made his will September 4, 1701, and it was proved February 24, 1701-2 at Taunton. His wife, Martha, died in 1704.[6]

The estate of Lawrence Springer of Little Compton was probated in Taunton February 25, 1701-2.[7]

Children

Children apparently attributed to Lawrence Springer and his wife, Martha ______ (sic) were:[8]

  • John, birth 1671
  • Jonathan, birth 1672
  • Edward, birth March 1685
  • Thomas, birth March 1685 [Note:were they twins, or is the date incorrect?]
  • Joseph
  • Benjamin
  • Harry
  • Mary
  • Waddy
  • Joanna
  • Martha ??

Another source gives further information on his children, and says (without providing any citations) that his wife was Martha Hicks.[6]

Springer-1386 and Springer-597 appear to represent the same person because: they share a similar birth year and the same son, Joseph, as mentioned in the biography of one of the Lawrence Springers.

We need a reliable source that supports the identification of:
  • the full name (including maiden name) of Lawrence Springer's wife
  • the name of her parents.

She is currently Martha Hicks attached as daughter of Samuel Hicks and Lydia Doane, but there's no evidence I've seen to date that Samuel and Lydia had a daughter named Martha.

They are two people...

Lawrence was born in Barbados in 1647 to John Springer (Stringer) and wife Margaret whereas Lorentz is the brother of Carl Christopher and is known to never have left Sweden

Appears to be a dupe of Lorentz Springer (1646-)

S. Willson and I have been chatting offline and have concluded that these were two separate people.
