Biography

Benjamin Daniels's wife has often been identified as ‘Elizabeth Stalcup’, but this appears to be a phantom based upon the probate bond of John Stallcup of Ross County, Ohio, 19 April 1814 (Ross County Probate Files, No. 8083). While Benjamin Daniels and Henry Carter were bondsmen for Martha Stallcup, John’s administratrix, it is known that Henry was married to Mary Elizabeth Chenoweth at the time and there is no indication that either men were related by blood or marriage to the Stallcup family. This is all the more likely given that John Stalcup appears on the 1800 Frederick County, Virginia tax list while Benjamin must almost certainly have married in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, probably shortly after 1790 and certainly before 1800.

See http://www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/stalcup/166/ for the 1986 publication which seems to have given rise to belief in Elizabeth Stalcop’s existence.

I was reviewing my DNA matches on Ancestry & this name as well as Benjamin Daniels came up as a match for me. I have a "dead end" with my great-great grandmother, Lavinia/Lovina/Louisa Daniels, born approx 1828 in Ohio. Does anyone know if Benjamin & Elizabeth had a daughter born in 1828? An Ancestry tree lists two "Sarah Daniels," one born in 1828. Also in the 1850 Federal Census, there is a Catherine Daniels (age 9) living in her household.
