Biography

George Forest[9] Stanbro was born March 22, 1880 in Geneseo, Henry County, Illinois.[1,2,3] He grew up in Henry County but as a young man went to Iowa.[4,5] On Feb 18, 1901, he married Estella Cole in Davenport, Iowa.[5] The couple moved back to Illinois. In 1910 he worked as a laborer doing "odd jobs" in Canoe Creek, Illinois.[6] Shortly after that he began a long career working for the railroad.[2,7,8] In 1920, he was a section foreman for the railroad and lived in Lyndon, Illinois.[7] When George registered for the draft in 1941, he lived in Eire, Illinois and worked for the Burlington Railroad.[2] George and Stella had one daughter, Ellen, born in 1917.[7] He died on April 12, 1963 in Iowa.[1]

Obituary from the Daily Illinois State Journal (Springfield), April 14, 1963, p. 15:

George Stanbro, 84, or 309 E. Keys Ave., died at 2:30 p.m. Friday at his residence.

A former resident of Erie and Hillsdale, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Benters of Springfield, for the past three years.

Born in Geneseo, the son of Frank and Rosa Marshall Stanbro, he lived most of his life at Erie and Hillsdale. Until his retirement 14 years ago, he worked for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, the final 25 years as section foreman.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Schilling Funeral Home, Erie, Rev. Rudolph Haak officiating. Burial will be in the Erie Cemetery.
