Hi Marylyn, would you please look again at this pre-1700 profile you created Richard Rule II (1680-1740) and added as a father to Elizabeth (Rule) McClean (1707-1784). Neither he nor his parents have any primary sources, and I can see no source on his or his daughter’s profile for any relationship between them, or for his being a Reverend. Please note also that the numbering system (I, II, etc.) is not used in England and should be removed. How was she born in County Antrim if he lived in Cambridgeshire throughout his life? Did he travel, if so are there any records to place him in Ireland?

Please look again at this help page which gives more information about creating pre-1700 profiles https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Pre-1700_Profiles

Best Regards,

Maddy (one of the England Project leaders).

Well, Thank you Maddy. I was interrupted doing the entry. And yes, Richard had 3 marriages, his parents and grandparents were married in Scotland. They are part of the greater Clan MacLean...and by the very nature of the MacLean Clan, members dodged back and forth between Ulster, Ireland and other members of the extended family trying to either avoid a feud with another clan or their own determination at supporting the Stuarts. Archibald Campbell, 1st Duke of Argyll, finally finagled the last of the MacLean's land from them via the court system in 1691 through the debt the MacLeans had run up supporting the Stuarts . Then, of course, there were the uprisings and finally Culloden... the whole clan was scattered. The Clan Campbell looted the castle and left it in ruins by 1751. Duart Castle was finally reclaimed 200+ years later by Sir Fitzroy Donald Maclean, the 26th Chief of the Clan MacLean in 1911. The restoration continues and is supported by the scattered members of Clan MacLean. I'll get back to the records, but life has intervened for now. http://www.maclean.org/
Thanks for having a Big Heart and taking responsibility for Orphaned Profiles. You will want to read this After Adopting Orphans as it explains the special attention adopted profiles will sometimes need from their profile managers.

Hello, Marylyn!

Congratulations on certifying to work on pre-1700 profiles! It’s VERY important to read and understand the Help:Pre-1700 Profiles page. These profiles for deep ancestors are shared by many, and collaborating on them works best if we all follow the guidelines in the certification quiz.

Primary sources should always be added to pre-1700 profiles at the time they are created. If you don't have a source for a pre-1700 profile, it would be best to ask for help in the G2G forum before creating the profile.

Thanks Pip. I have been motivated to delve into the pre-1700 world after getting my hands on a couple primary resources and finding the lack of access and representation in the online records for my family's Clan. Not everyone enjoys the minutiae of record keeping in the library world where I've been for the past 40 years, but I find the puzzle and the hunt just the thing. Cataloging has always been my first love as a librarian, all the rest of the librarian's skills branch off from cataloging I've found. I will be mindful of the culture you all have created here and look forward to working with everyone.

Marylyn, MLS

Just so you know, in my experience librarians are often the best members of our community because of their attention to detail! Your experiences will go a long way here. Thanks!

Kind regards,

Pip

Welcome Marylyn

We are so happy you decided to upgrade to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

You mentioned that you don’t know much about your family tree yet. I assume you are new to genealogy. No problem! Every genealogist is a beginner at some point. Take your time, keep track of sources, and ask questions. Check here for tips.
