Notes

Note N55Edward STAPLETON Jr. was born on August 1, 1749 in Baltimore Co., Md. He died in 1809 in Gibson County, Indiana. Some sources say Knox Co., Ind. Edward Stapleton, Jr. was living in Rowan Co., NC in 1780. From Rowan Co., NC Library, p127, 1778 Rowan County Tax Lists, Capt. Armstrong's District shows the following Stapleton names: Edward Stapleton, Jr. 225.0.0; Edward Stapleton is listed on p128 also in Capt Armstrong's District. Capt. Lyons' District p143 lists Thomas Stapleton 148. Edward Stapleton is a signer of the WASHINGTON COUNTY LEGISLATIVE PETITIONS 1777-1786, Petition of December 9, 1785 for the division of Washington County Virginia. His father is also listed and Isaiah Stills (Salyer) is living beside him. He is the only Stapleton in Washington County in 1786. In 1787 Thomas Sr. and Jr. are there when Russell County was formed. An Edward is back on the list in 1789 and appears again in 1792. On 1793 Edward is on Land Tax Lower District for 165 ac. In 1791 Edward buys 145 ac. Land on Big Copper Creek from Jacob Neese and wife Mary, this deed proven in court 3/ 22/ 1795 by oaths of Thomas Stapleton, John William Stapleton and Edward Dorton. In 1793 Edward and wife sell land to Stephen Ogden Page 94 Russell Co., Order Book Aug 1793 Court Session I. Edward disappears from Tax List 1795, 1796, and 1797. See note on daughter Cleo. Also, Gibson Co., Land Records: Book B. p. 11 & 12, 11/ 10/ 1813--Jesse Emerson, John Hunter, and James Smith, Commissioners for and in behalf of Edward Stapleton, deceased of Gibson County Indiana Territory and Frederick Stapleton of the Other part being of Henderson County Kentucky for the sum of $ 120.00 the said Edward Stapleton in hand paid by the said Frederick Stapleton the receipt whereof the said Jesse Emerson, John Hunter and James Smith as Commissioners do acknowledge and discharged said Frederick and his heirs a certain tract of land --60 acres part of an undivided quarter section in Range 12 South Township? Thence Sec 2 N W 1/ 4 & lying along the Eastern boundary of said quarter; signed by Commissioners. Edward's will is written 9/ 16 1809 in Knox County, Indiana Territory mentions his wife Catharine, and sons Thomas, James, Joseph, Ruth, Edward III, Sarah, Joshua, John, Chloe and with son Frederic and Catherine giving oath in November term of the court in 1809. Joseph Stapleton was to receive $ 50 from Thomas and James as soon as he reached 21 years of age. I have transcribed copy of will in hand. Apparently his sons James and Thomas were single as he gave them one feather bed jointly.

He was married to Catherine (Frily) FRALEY (daughter of Frederick (Froelich\ Fryly) FRALEY and Chloe) about 1775 in Rowan Co, Dutchman’s Creek, NC. Edward documented his wife and family in his will, it is an excellent confirmation of the family group, even indicating that Joseph as under 21. Catherine (Frily) FRALEY died about 1816. She was born about 1760. Edward STAPLETON Jr. and Catherine (Frily) FRALEY had the following children:

+ 34 i. John "Jack" STAPLETON born on September 8, 1778. + 35 ii. Joshua STAPLETON born on January 28, 1782. + 36 iii. Frederick STAPLETON born in 1789/ 90. 37 iv.
