Biography

There is no record of when Anne Starkey was born. Helsby, in the second edition of Ormerod's History of the County Palatine and City of Chester, says Anne's father was probably the Thomas Starkey murdered by Richard Savage son of Sir John Savage the elder who was imprisoned because his son failed to appear in court but released by the king's writ dated at Shene on 4 June 7 Henry VII [1492],[1] in which case Anne would have been born prior to 4 June 1492. Her mother was living a widow by 21 April 1513[2] so Anne was born before then.

Anne was probably born at the Upper Hall in Stretton, Bucklow Hundred, Cheshire, England. The Upper Hall in Stretton was the home of this Starkey family since at least 30 Edward I [20 November 1301-19 November 1302].[1]

Anne was the daughter of Thomas Starkey[3] [4] of the Upper Hall in Stretton, Cheshire, England, and his wife, Joan, daughter of John Bunbury of Stanney.[1] Joane Bunbury, wife of Thomas Starky was living a widow in 4 Henry VIII[2] which was 22 April 1512-21 April 1513.

Anne was the sister of Richard Starky[5] of Overhall or Higher Hall, Stretton, jun, living son and heir in 19 Henry VIII [22 April 1527-21 April 1528] and 1566, who married Katherine, daughter of Richard Clive of Huxley.[1]

Anne married twice:

  1. James Burrows,[3] or Boroughs;[5]
  2. George Woodnoth, lord of Shavinton,[3] alias Woodnett of Shevington,[5] and Wodenote, lord of Shavington,[4] widower of Matilda Wood, aka Maud, daughter of Ralph Wood of Badersley, esq,[5] son of Humphrey Wood of Balterley,[3] aka Batterley, Staffordshire;[4] Anne and George had no children.[3]
