Possible??: Wesley Stevens/Stephens
Company: H Unit: 154 Ohio Infantry. (National Guard.) Rank - Induction: Private Rank - Discharge: Private Allegiance: Union
I have tried numerous times to track him down but to no avail. I have looked in census records and in Civil War records since death date of 1862 is during Civil War. Have found various possibilities but none that fit these dates exactly. We don't know where Wesley went after his mother died in 1855 when he would have been 16. In1860, we find Arnold, Erial, & Eleanor living with other families in Knox Co, Milford Twp, OH but I didn't find Wesley. I thought perhaps he might be with one of his mother's siblings still in NY or possibly MI or WI, where many from Youngstown, NY went. Charlotte McLaughlin Stevens had 11 siblings. At least two of them went to Corunna, Shiawassee Co, MI; two returned to Ancaster, Ontario, Canada, a couple stayed in Niagara Co, NY, and I don't know about the others. Daughter Ida was adopted (officially or unofficially??) by Charlotte's sister Eliza and Stephen Olney and is listed in census records and on her death record as Ida Olney (Anderson.) Did I send you info on the McLaughlins??? Years ago I corresponded with a McLaughlin researcher and together we were able to find quite a few things on them.
But back to Wesley. All I really know for certain is that Wesley died before his father, Arnold, did in 1873. When I visited Lincoln Stevens in Mt. Vernon, OH in 1999, he showed me part of his father's (Morris) research which included a photocopy of a telegram from Erial to Arnold's second wife Rebecca (Burgess) Chandler Stevens stating that he (Erial) was not able to return to Ohio in 1873 for Arnold's burial but advises Rebecca to bury Arnold "next to Wesley" , indicating that Wesley is already dead! Unfortunately we don't know where Arnold or Wesley are buried!! Neither are listed by either Stevens or Stephens in the Knox Co Cemetery Book put out by the Knox Co Historical Society. I can only assume they are buried in Knox Co, possibly in the Five Corners cemetery near the Stevens farm, as Rebecca wouldn't have been able to afford to ship Arnold's body all the way back to NY. Lincoln Stevens may have a lot more information in his collection but he has never responded to me when I've made requests. (When I was there, at the invitation of John Stevens, his brother, with whom I've had good correspondence), they were having a family reunion at the wedding of one of their kids. I took them all out to Milford Twp and showed them the location of Arnold Stevens' farm and that of Ephraim and Harriet Hawkins farm.)

Note

I've been unsuccessful in finding Wesley in OH or NY records after 1850.

He arrived at Camp Bartley, Mansfield, Ohio, August 10, 1861. Twenty-four of the original 94 men served four years, coming back to Mt. Vernon July 29, 1865. They located in a house on the lots where the jail now is (110 West Coolbaugh Street). This was the year that General Grant was first elected president and since the railroad came only to Keokuk, Iowa, they brought the election returns from Keokuk to the people of Red Oak.
