I use Family Tree Maker 2016 version. I can not figure out how to make a GEDCOM to export my tree to WikiTree. Can you help me?

[email address removed]

I have FTM 2019 but as I remember 2016 works much the same way so here are the steps to export your tree to a GedCom.

Open a tree: click on File - then in the drop down box click on Export; don't password protect; new window choose Output format and click on GedCom and select individuals to include or select entire file. Just follow the prompts from there to finish and have it download.

One caution, if your tree on FTM is very large, try to break it up and do several GedComs. My suggestion is to manually add your parents, grandparents and great grands. Source those and fill in some biography That way you will learn how the profiles are created and how to do those items. Then create a small GedCom from one of your Great grandparents - maybe 20 people just to figure out how it works. Then do one for about 50 people and work through that one. Then, you can do larger ones if you wish and you will figure out if you want to add manually or add through GedComs and GedCompare process. Along the way, you will probably find some ancestors who already have profiles and you can just link to them.

I hope this helps and please ask as questions arise.

Hello Patricia,

We are so happy you have upgraded to the Family Member level.

Please visit our tutorial pages to learn how to use WikiTree: Member How To Use WikiTree. They will save you time, energy, and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Exploring the site is the best way to learn. One way to do that is to check out the drop-down menus on the top right side of your profile page. Finding a known ancestor and collaborating with the profile manager is another great way to start.

Questions? You can always use the G2G link in the Help Menu to find answers.

I clicked the link you gave me. It took me here - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:New_Member_How-To%C2%A0New. This page does not exist.

I need another route to get there, I guess.

Patricia, I am so sorry that link did not work for you. Were you logged in to WikiTree when you tried to use it? If not, it would not have worked properly. Here it is again in case somthing was wrong with the first one: How To Use WikiTree If this one does not work, please let me know.
