The first information connected to Charles Stewart is he was married about 1816 to Cynthia Mead (based on the birth of their first child). There is no record of the marriage and confusion has resulted because there is a marriage for Mitchell Stewart to Cynthia Mead in Lawrence County, Kentucky on April 20, 1859 which is of course way too late to be the proper persons. However, this has not prevented some researchers from changing Charles' name to "Mitchell Charles" Stewart. Just so you know, please check and recheck any data connected with Charles Stewart.
Using the 1820 and 1830 census it has been surmised Charles was born about 1790 to 1800. Researchers should keep in mind there were several Charles Stewarts in both Greenup and the adjacent county of Lawrence. Because Charles farmed land in Greenup County we presume he would be one of the Charles' in Greenup and therefore not one of them in the adjoining Lawrence County. Of two Charles' in 1830 Greenup Co he is presumed to be the one (age 30-40) on page 88 because he is living two households from Elizabeth Mead, the mother of his wife Cynthia.[1] The Charles Stewart on page 73 of the 1830 Greenup County, Kentucky census was an older man, age 45 and up.[2] Looking back at the 1820 Greenup County, Kentucky census we can see Charley Stewart on page 173 is age 26 to 45[3] while Charley Steward (surname spelled with "d") on page 167 is over 45 years old. [4]This seems to verify the assumption of Charles' identity in the 1830 census.
Unfortunately Charles was not found in the 1840 census but his wife (Cintha Stewart) was shown as head of household. There is no male in her household in an age category that could be Charles. Cintha is living five households from her mother Elizabeth Mead.[5] We know Elizabeth Mead was Cynthia's mother because there is a Greenup County, Kentucky Deed dated 16 Feb 1835, Greenup Co., Kentucky between Elizabeth Mead and Cynthia Stewart. This sale was probably to make sure Cynthia had a farm and home for her children since Cynthia's husband, Charles Stewart, had died.[6]
Cynthia Stewart died about 1853 when her estate settlement and division of land were recorded in Greenup County, Kentucky. [7]
The one tangible item to identify Charles and his family is the land the family lived on. That is backed up by a Greenup County, Kentucky deed which demonstrates that Charles Stewart's children received a portion of the estate of John Stewart, their grandfather because Charles had pre-deceased his father.
Greenup County Deed Book M, p 76 dated 19 Oct 1855, James A. Stewart & Hannah Stewart his wife to Alfred Gilley, all of Greenup Co.-- $100-land on waters of White Oak in the flatwoods, being the same lands heretofore sold and conveyed by William Riggs & Sophia Riggs his wife & John M. Stewart & George W. Stewart & Harriet his wife to said William Stewart and the same being the entire right and interest in said land as formerly held by Charles Stewart deceased and which conveyance is to include all the said lands owned by said Charles Stewart deceased to him. Signed: James A. Stewart, Hannah (X) Stewart Attest: L.J. Hampton. [8]
Here is an explanation of the people mentioned in this deed: Sophia Riggs, wife of William Riggs, mentioned in this deed was Sophia Stewart, daughter of Charles Stewart and Cynthia Mead. John M. and George W. Stewart were also children of Charles Stewart and Cynthia Mead. The William Stewart they had previously sold to would be Charles Stewart's brother William Stewart who administered the estate of John Stewart.
