Biography

John was born in 1834 in Louisa County, Virginia, the son of Robert Stewart and Eliza ??. His family may have moved to settle in Lewis County, Virginia, which soon became part of West Virginia. John was farming and living in Upshur County, Virginia (present day West Virginia) when he married Rebecca Alcinda Gaston in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia) in 1859. She joined John initially in Upshur County. The couple may have lived shortly in Lewis County and by 1870 they were settled in the Lost Creek Area in Harrison County. They had 14 children together, four of whom died young. By 1900, John had moved the family to Weston in Lewis County. The 1910 census found Rebecca still living in Weston with two of their daughters and John living with another daughter's family in Webster County, WV. John died in 1917 and is buried with his wife and some children in Machpelah Cemetery in Weston.

1850: Parent's names are perfect match for John's marriage record, and proximity to Upshur County where John was resident before his marriage in 1859, but John does not show up unless he is the 'Charles R' son. Note that there is still a Robert Stewart aged 60 back in Louisa Co. staying with a brother. also note that a Robert S Stewart married an Elizabeth Allman in Lewis Co. Virginia 17 Jul 1850, making this record a less likely match to our John's family:
