He was the son of James Stewart and Janet Menzies, from whom he inherited Fothergill. James was the younger son of Sir Alexander Stewart, Earl of Buchan who died about 1400. Sir Alexander was the 4th, 3rd surviving, son of Robert II Stewart, King of Scots and brother of Robert III.
