Biography

1776 Project
Sergeant Stephen Stiles served with Washington County Militia, Pennsylvania Militia during the American Revolution.
Daughters of the American Revolution
Stephen Stiles is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A109984.

All indications point to Stephen being born in New Jersey (Additional research is needed). At some point, Stephen moved to Washington County, Pennsylvania, where he settled for a period of time.[1] Stephen was a listed as a Sergeant in the Revolutionary War, under CAPT JAMES ARCHER, 1ST BATT, WASHINGTON CO MILITIA, and "suffered depredations" to either his person or his property, according to DAR records.

By 1810, Stephen had moved his family to Monongalia County, Virginia. One must wonder whether there was any connection between the massacre of 96 Moravian Indians in 1782 by the Washington County Pennsylvania Militia, of which it does not appear that Stephen took part in, but would certainly have known about, had an influence on him removing to Monongalia County Virginia along with just about, if not all, of his family members.[2]

On October 27 1815, Stephen wrote his will, witnessed by Vincent Hewes, John Myers, and Isaac Price, where he bequeathed either cash or property to his children, and wife Deborah. His son, William was named as executor of his estate and was instructed to pay $1000.00 over a ten year period to Job, Aaron, Ruth, Lyddia, and Stephen's wife, Deborah. The remaining children Jonathan, Ruth, and William received property owned by Stephen, indicating that they were still in the area, whereas the other children probably were living in another area. The will was proved in the May 1819 session of court Monongalia County, Virginia.[3]

Land Transfers

Farmed 429 acres in Bedford Co. in 1772. Recieved patent to land Nov. 26,1804. Oct. 23, 1792 bought out warrent to another tract of land held by Stephen Barber. Patented under the name "New Stile" May 30, 1793. This was 254 acres. Feb 18, 1805 joined by wife Deborra of Monongalia Co. in a deed to John Reynard and sold part of "Independence" he had stated he lived in Monongalia Co. VA. Apr. 16, 1805 Stephen and Deborra sold a the balance of "Independence" to Ezekiel Knight. William son of Stephen witnessed the transaction. All of the deeds were recorded on Oct. 12 1805. This evidenced that Stephen had lost his first wife Bithena after 1795 and married Deborra before 1805. (Deed Book 2, pp 130-131) (Leckey, 1952)

AFGS 2 _SDATE 1 JUL 1762 [5]

Lydia was the daughter of Stephen Stiles and his second wife, Bithena, not his third wife, Deborrah. He and Deborrah had no children.

Lydia was likely named after Stephen's first wife, who died in Morris County NJ in 1762, shortly after giving birth to their second child. Stephen left the two boys, Job and Aaron, with his much older half-brother, John, and his wife, Rachel, to raise, then moved to what eventually became Greene County, PA.

He moved a few miles across the nearby state line into Monongalia County (VA), WV, only after all his six children by Bithena were born. Those children were Ruth [Rinehart], William, Jonathan, Thomas, Elizabeth [Knight]and Lydia [Long].

Deborrah was the wife of his old age. He was in his late 60's when he married her.

Stephen and Bithena were my 4th great grandparents through their second child, William. [6]
