Biography

John was born in 1772(calculated from age on gravestone), the son of Thomas Stinson and Margaret McClure. In 1790, his parents lived on Deer Isle.[1]

John married Isabelle Dyer on Deer Isle in 1796.[2]In 1800, they lived on Deer Isle with 3 young children.[3]In 1810, 1820 and 1830 they lived on Deer Isle.[4][5][6]Isabelle died in 1837. In 1840, John continued to live on Deer Isle.[7]

John married Olive Smith Trundy on Deer Isle in 1847. [8]In 1850, they lived on Deer Isle with 7 of Olive's children from her marriage to Thomas Trundy and their 1-year-old son George. John was a 78-year-old farmer and Olive was 48.[9]

John died in Rockland in 1858. He is buried on Deer Isle in Evergreen Cemetery.[10]

From An Historical Sketch of the Town of Deer Isle, Maine by George Hosmer:

"...John Stinson was the youngest son, and his wife was Miss Isabel Dyer, of Castine, now Brooksville, on Cape Rozier. After her death he married the widow of Mr. Thomas Trundy. He lived on his father's farm until about thirty years ago, when it was sold to Mr. Lane, the present occupant. Mr. Stinson died in Rockland, where he removed after the sale of the place. He was a man of good reputation, and was more communicative than either of his brothers, who were rather taciturn, particularly Mr. William Stinson. He was for many years a church member, and took much interest in that direction. His sons were John, Thomas, David, and George W., of all whom removed from this town. The daughters were the wives of Messrs. James and Ebenezer Joyce, and Alexander Staples, all of Swan's Island, and Mrs. Staples afterward became the wife of Mr. Joseph Small. By his second marriage Mr. Stinson had a son, now living near Boston, at the time of whose birth the father was about seventy-six years of age. "
