Samuel was born in 1690. He passed away in 1772. [1]
Samuel Stokes died 1772 and left a will naming his son David Stokes, and daughters Lorel Rachel, "Cissa" (Cecelia) Thompson, and son-in-law Christopher "Croslin" [Crossland] (husband of Judith Stokes). The will does not name his son John who was deceased. Samuel Stokes was either married twice - Sarah (1), Mary (2)/much younger - or there were two Samuel Stokes. There are Albemarle Parish birth records for children of Samuel & Mary Stokes [Rebekah b. 14 Oct 1759 ; Samuel (Jr) b. 3 Mar 1762], but neither of these children are named in his will. This is probably evidence that there were two Samuel's and the one married to Mary was a much younger Samuel. There are also deed records for Samuel Stokes as follows:
30 Dec 1727, Silvanus Stokes, Gentleman, to Samuel Stokes, Yeoman, 180 ac, part of 365 ac. granted to Silvanus Stokes 5 Sep 1723 on Halfway Branch, Racoon Swamp. Wit: Jones Stokes, Silvanus Stokes, J. Evans, John Thompson. (Surry Book 7, p. 872).
29 Aug 1746, Samuel & SARAH Stokes to John Stokes, 200 ac called "John Stokes" where John Stokes now lives, patented to Silvanus Stokes 28 Sep 1732 and patented to Samuel Stokes 29 May 1742, S Nottoway, N Racoon Swamp, Halfway Branch, High Hills Path. Wit: Silvanus Stokes, Burrell Bell, Robert Berry. (Book 4, p. 463).
19 Mar 1748, Samuel Stokes to David Stokes, 150 ac called "Davids", granted to Samuel Stokes 29 May 1742, now in tenure of David Stokes, S Nottoway, N Racoon Swamp, adj. Silvanus Stokes, High Hill Path. Wit: Silvanus Stokes, Jones Stokes, Nathan Northington. (Book 5, p. 348).
The Stokes DNA project has established that Samuel Stokes (1685-1730), Young Stokes (1700-1770 Lunenburg), Silvanus Stokes II (d. Feb 1748) all have the same Haplogroup (paternal tree branch) R-M 269, and each have the Stokes Y chromosome.
It has also been established that David Stokes (m. Sarah Montfort) was a son of a John Stokes (m. Elizabeth) has a Haplogroup marker I-M253, which means that John was of a different paternal tree branch than Samuel, Young & Silvanus. This David is named in the will of his mother Elizabeth, widow of John Stokes. There were multiple John Stokes: one was the son of the William Stokes that was the son of Christopher Stokes; this John Stokes' children are listed in the Abingdon Parish records (no son named David) and inherited lands originally patented to Christopher Stokes. But, this John Stokes also had a son named John (Jr) b. 1686 and he may be the one married to Elizabeth and the father of David Stokes m. Sarah Montfort (?). This would also mean that the David Stokes in above deed, son of Samuel Stokes, was a cousin and that there were multiple David Stokes.
