Charles Edward Stowe Weds in Los Angeles
The culmination of an old romance came yesterday when Charles Edward Stowe of San Ysidro ranch, only surviving child of Harriet Beecher Stowe, was united in marriage at the Clark hotel, Los Angeles, to Miss Elizabeth Holmes, the woman who forty years ago sang each Sunday in the choir of the church where he and his first wife attended services and who was a dear friend and companion to the first Mrs. Stowe. Mrs. Stowe died two years ago, and on her deathbed requested that the marriage take place.
Mr. Stowe came to California in 1865, sailing around the Horn. Though a master mariner and with the immediate prospects of a skipper's berth, in response to his mother's pleadings he gave up the sea and settled down on land to the profession of journalism. Yesterday's bride was first attracted to Mr. Stowe when as a young girl, she visited with his fiance and listened to the tales of sea life told by the son of writer of "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Later on, after several children had been born to Mr. and Mrs. Stowe, Miss Holmes became a companion to Mrs. Stowe, then an invalid.
Rev. Carl S. Patton of the First Congregational church, Los Angeles, performed the marriage ceremony.[3]
