Biography

Anthony arrived from England on 19 June 1635[1].

  • The below listing is contextualized and may be false.
    • "The Street Genealogy" 1895 states that John, brother of William, was the progenitor of the VA Street line and lists his coat "the ancient arms of Street" Catherine wheels on a red field, as our lineage. We now know he wasn't the first. Therefore, that coat also belongs to George and to John 1640 before him. Of the 6 known Street coats in England, only that one belongs to Streets in Worcester, Worcestershire and documented there as early as 1500. We know that the ancestor credited as Anthony's father had that coat from his father, and after checking siblings and other possible connections, no other line is possible for Anthony, therefore Anthony must be father to John, and the first VA settler.

Virginia Immigrants Indices show Anthony Streete [sic] on a land patent application dated: 19 June 1635 which did not list arrival status.[1], sponsored by William Spencer (1589-1638). The patent was renewed in 10 Feb 1637[1], again under Spencer's sponsorship.

  • William Spencer (1589-1638) was an original Jamestown settler who, because he stayed in VA, was granted several land parcels south of the James River, in 1624, 1629, 1632, 1635[1] & 1637 [1] (nearly 3000 acres total). Records show he made at least one trip back to England.

Children listed have been said to be Henry Street (abt.1639-aft.1711) and John Street (1640-1711), in or around Isle of Wight County where the family resided. Anthony died about 1683.

Claimed proven FALSE

Research Notes

-- ALL NOTES MUST BE VERIFIED AND SOURCED! --

  • Anthony had three sons: John Street, Henry Street, and Richard Streete.
  • Possibly a different Anthony ... Anthony Street (-abt.1694) resembles the birth and death dates, served on the HMS Sandwich as a midshipman. Need further evidence to prove or disprove the case.
  • Name in Old English was 'Streate' was changed to "Street',
  • listing of 2nd VA charter listed "Streate" and Cav/Pioneers entry listed Anthony Street at "Ano. Streate"[2][3]
William Spencer's land in Surry County

I have REMOVED Ann Bent due to found sources for the Bent family which does not show any marriages into the Street line except one instance in the 1500's. Ann Street immigration in 1638 was not even close to the same area.

I am late to the party, but trying to verify my Street lineage. I havae Anthony Street (Streate) as my 8th GGF, Is there a clear date for Anthony arriving from England?

DEbbie Street Schwartz

With our Street line, you are *NEVER* too late to the party. The date is 19 June 1635 when he arrived and the source is #1 in the source section. There is even a link I added to the book entry. I also have a pool of other names that could be related, such as William Street who sponsored some of the Jamestown settlers, a Robert street in 1650 Virginia (previously unknown), we also have questionable actions for a John Streate from Virginia for skirting tobacco tax in 1626/7, lastly one of the merchant guilds has a Streate in Virginia around that time.

Also have Jamestown ref to a William Street, mariner in the Jamestown exploration, Humphrey Streete, Master.

Thank you for the reply. I am so intrigued by the search for my (our) ancestors. It took some time to find the right lineage but I think Anthony is definitley the first arrival here in my Street history. Have a great day!
What sources are there for wife being an Ann Bent, and the children attached to this profile? The Millennium File is not a reliable source as it was compiled from unsourced family trees.

Am still trying to track that one down.

The two lists of transported persons are the same for 1635 and 1637, plus an extra 5 persons for the 1637 grant of land. The transcription of the 1635 grant ends with the statement "This pattent re- newed. Tho. Cooke, Clk.". The 1637 grant is the renewal plus an extra 250 acres for the extra 5 persons.

This shows that Anthony was only transported the once as an indentured servant. The date of 19 June 1635 is when Spencer's land was granted, not the date of transportation.
