John is the son of Hugh and Ruth (Patterson) Stuart. He was born in 1794, in Middleton Township (Now South Middleton) in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania.
John married Barbara Steen, were married on January 14, 1816, in Silver Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania at the First Presbyterian Church. The marriage was officiated by Reverend Henry Wilson. From the marriage, 10 children were born, 8 lived to maturity.
John engaged in milling, and farming. He later went to law school, presumably at Dickonson College, and became a judge for Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. John was a prominent citizen and well liked within the community. A few of his children entered the politacal and judicial fields, all achieved prominence in one form or another.
