The father settled on Elk Creek....When Nathan Jr. married Anna Mendenhall his father gave him sixty acres of land close to Bennett' Mill. His portion of land was smaller than that of the other sons because, in the Friend's Separation he did not go with his father. My mother's grandfather was afterward sorry that he cut his son off with only sixty acres, when it was too late.... " 'Nathan Stubbs [Jr.] died when only forty-four years old, leaving his widow with six children [Martha Ann having already married], the youngest (my mother) but five years old. After the building of the big house on his farm Nathan built a barn. During that summer he neglected the attendance of meeting on Fifth Day. That, and his wearing a coat (wedding coat), with brass buttons, formed the basis of complaint against him resulting in the meeting disowning him.' "
