Notes

The following is quoted from Biographical and Genealogical History of Cass, Miami, Howard and Tipton Counties, Indiana: v. 2.
"Jesse Overman... was married in Preble county, Ohio, June 14, 1810, to Keziah Stubbs, whose birth occurred in Georgia, July 19, 1790. Her parents, Nathan and Elizabeth Stubbs, and their family, were also connected with the Friends' church, and at an early day emigrated from Georgia to Preble county, Ohio, where the father became one of the substantial farmers of the locality. Nathan Stubbs, of a German family, was born the 10th month, 11th day, 1758, and died the 4th month, 26th day, 1835, respected by all who knew him. His wife, Elizabeth, was born the 3d month, 19th day, 1767, and died the 6th month, 7th day, 1828... He reached the venerable age of eighty-seven years, and died September 21, 1869, at the home of his son Elijah, in Miami county. His wife passed away in Wayne county, September 21, 1835.
"The children who came to bless the union of Jesse and Keziah Overman were as follows: Henry, born the 5th month, 3d day, 1811; Eli, born the 7th month, 8th day, 1812, and died the 2d month, 17th day, 1893, aged eighty years, seven months and nine days; Elizabeth, born the 1st month, 2d day, 1814, and died when about ten years old; William, born the 2d month, 7th day, 1816; Rachel, born the 12th month, 5th day, 1817, married Josiah Haisley, and is now deceased; Rebecca, born the 5th month, 10th day, 1819, married Ira Haisley, and died the 2d month, 19th day, 1897; Ephraim, born the 9th month, 23d day, 1820; Nathan, 7th month, 14th day, 1822; Enoch and Elijah, twins, 2d month, 1st day, 1824; Joseph, 9th month, 6th day, 1826; Hannah, born 12th month, 14th day, 1828, married Calvin Edgerton, and died the 4th month, 14th day, 1889; and Mary, born the 9th month, 17th day, 1830, and died the 1st month, 17th day, 1865."
Above is the source for Nathan & Elizabeth as Keziah's parents and adds to or confirms data from other sources. This states that Nathan Stubbs was "of a German family." The Blackburn site, however, gives several generations of ancestors, all from Worcester and Gloucester, England. At this point, I have no reason to consider either source more definitive. The Blackburn site gives more details (names, places, dates) but the book cited above is a more contemporary record (1898). The Blackburn site also gives her birth date as 20 Apr 1768, but has only the year, 1828, of her death. The exact date of death is from the book quoted above.
Nathan and Elizabeth (Jones) Stubbs are my 5xg-grandparents and I will probably enter the rest of their children and their descendants at some future date. For now, I have entered only Keziah (Stubbs) Overman, my direct-line ancestor (4xg-grandmother). - FR

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

The confusion here arises because Nathan Stubbs had two wives, both with the maiden name of Jones. His first wife was Eleanor Jones, the daughter of Francis and Sarah (unknown) Jones, Eleanor and Nathan were married in Chatham County, North Carolina in June 1785. Eleanor died about 1787 in Wrightsborough, Columbia County, Georgia. Nathan then married Elizabeth Jones, the daughter of Henry and Kaziah (Hickson) Jones, on 12 March 1788, again in Chatham County, North Carolina. Elizabeth is the mother of Nathan's children. Eleanor died without issue. Nathan and Elizabeth (Jones) Stubbs were my g-g-g-g-grandparents.

William,

I have not dug into this particular profile in a long time. Could you please provide a source for the two wives? The problem, of course, was the merge proposal. If we can document it, Eleanor should be added as Nathan's first wife.

Fred,

Most of my information on this family comes from the book, Jones and Related Families, by Carroll Brewster Jones, self published by Mr. Jones, Marcellus, Michigan, 1951.

Pages 31-33: The marriage of Francis Jones to his first cousin, Sarah Jane Jones in Chester County, PA, in 1748. She was the daughter of Henry and Eleanor Parke-Lindley Jones. These pages describe their marriage and movements, but on Page 33 there is a list of their children, among whom was "45 Elinder b. 12-19-1766, m. Nathan Stubbs (s. John and Esther Maddock Stubbs)" [Just as an aside, Eleanor Parke-Lindley is also one of my ancestors].

Page 58: "112 ELIZABETH JONES...m. 3-12-1788 in Chatham County, N.C. Henry Stubbs b. 10-3-1759 Chatham Co. N.C. d. 4-26-1835 Butler Co. O. He m. (1) Eleanor Jones b,1766 d, 1787 (dt. Francis and Sarah Jones Jones)."

This book, as stated above, is a reproduction and very poorly bound. Several pages are already loose and I have wrapped rubber bands around the book to hold them in place. However, I would be happy to copy pages for you if you would like.

In addition, I have found three references to the marriage of Henry Jones to Eleanor Jones in The books, A Genealogy of the Descendants of Elijah Mendenhall of the Fifth Generation in America (p. 5) and The Stubbs Index: Descendants of Thomas Stubbs and Mary Minor, (descendant (descendant #71), and in Encyclopedia Of American Quaker Genealogy. Vol. 1, p. 1050. And finally in Encyclopedia Of American Quaker Genealogy. Vol. 1, p 1044, Elixzabeth Jones is listed as the daughter of Henry and Keziah (Hickson) Jones,

This is a very convoluted family. In addition to having the very common name of Jones, they seemed to name several sons Francis, and married their cousins. It can get confusing.

By the way, I go by Bill, and my email is: [email address removed] Not that that is brewerbil...only one "l". Hope this helps.

Bill
