Biography

Alice Stubbs was the youngest daughter of John and Elizabeth Stubbs (Stubbe Stubby) of Buxton Norfolk. [1] She was probably born abut 1550, based on the birth of her elder brother. The family zealously embraced puritanism; her brother John Stubbs (Stubbe) was a notable puritan writer who lost his right hand for publishing his truth. [2]

In 1577, she married puritan Thomas Cartwright. [3] She was named as living in his 1603 Will, [4] along with their children Samuel and Martha, then unmarried. Others were:

Anne - m. William Lockey
Mary - m. Andrew Wilmer

Alice Cartwright wrote her Will [5] on 5 November 1614; it was proved 1 March 1616/7. In it, she styled herself as of Totteridge in Hertfordshire - perhaps near her daughter Mary Wilmer. She named her three daughters and their husbands:

Anne and William Lockey, their son John
Mary and Andrew Wilmer, their son Samuel
Martha and Nicholas Woodrof, their son Robert

Son Samuel, named in Thomas Cartwright's 1603 Will, was not mentioned. Also named were her brother, Master Francis Stubbe of Norfolk, and her nephew John Shardelowe of Shimplinge in Norfolk. Her three sons-in-law named executors.

Research Note:

DNB [6] names a son Thomas, father of Thomas Cartwright, Bishop of Chester. This Thomas is not mentioned in either of the Wills of Thomas or Alice Cartwright, nor is he mentioned by Pearson. He has not been attached to this profile.
