Thoroton, in 1677, states this about the early history of Sutton [1].:
Before the Conquest, William, son of Seelward, had a Manor in Sutton which was chargeable to the public taxataion in that time for two Carucates and 6 Bovates. This afterwards was given to Earl Alan of Richmond, whose man or tenant there called Hervius had 2 carucates or plows.....The Posterity of this Hervey took there surname from this place."
Thoroton shows two generations of Suttons between Hervey #1 and Hervey #4. These generations are necessary to make the dates work but there is no evidence as to their names or marriages. Them being called Hervey is an assumption.
