Biography

This profile is part of the Swartwout Name Study.

Bernardus Swartwout was born in 1759. He married Rymerich Van Etten (1751/1756-1816) on 5/24/1779 in the Minisink valley, Orange County, New York.[1]

Bernardus Swartwout apparently married Rymerigh van Etten, but there is no known record of their marriage. There is a baptism record for one child from their marriage, daughter Knelia, born 22 Jun 1797 and baptized 27 August 1797 at Walpeck. Other children identified as theirs are Simeon Swartwood, who married Susannah Schoonover and had daughter Rimerick Swartwood, born 25 March 1813 and baptized 13 June 1813 at Walpeck, and John Swartwood, who married Mariah Miller and had daughter Rimareth Swartwood, born 11 December 1822, baptized 11 December 1826 at Walpack. [2][3] The unusual name Rymerigh, which has multiple spellings, is evidence of the family relationships.[4]

Barnabus had military service during the American Revolutionary War. [5]

Barnabas Swartwood died in Pennsylvania on 21 March 1843 at age 87 and was buried on 11 Apr 1843 in Pennsylvania.[5][6]

Church Records

Children's baptisms
  1. 1797. Aug. 27. Bernardus Swartwout, Rymerig Van Etten. Knelia, b. 22 June 1797.[7]

Research Notes

Find a Grave Memorial for John Van Etten Swartwood names him as father.

No records are identified here to support the claimed baptism on 27 November 1759. The Minisink church records do not include any baptisms or marriages to correspond with the dates shown here. If he was truly age 87 at his death in 1843, that suggests a birth in in 1756 (but there is no Minisink baptism record for him in 1756).
