Biography

Rebecca is said to be the dau of Richmond and Catherine (Unknown) Terrell of Lancaster Co., SC although there Is no document supporting it. However, the name Richmond was given a son, a grandson, a great grandson and at least three later direct generations. Throughout the censuses, her ages have varied widely, so much so that a pension reviewer, upon taking Rebecca's testimony, commented on the disparity in a pension application review for Sarah McManus, [1] This was in an effort to deny the applicant a pension.

Excerpt from Application:
'3rd John McMANUS aged about 81 and Mrs. Rebecca McMANUS aged about 82 in May 1855 testify that they have each been acquainted with Mrs. Sarah McMANUS for the last 70 years that they also knew her late husband the said Charles McManus, having been acquainted with him for either 60 or 70 years (it is not certain which is meant) previous to his death -- that Chas and Sarah McMANUS were married on the ___ day of A. D. 1796 -- that they were at the wedding and saw them married. Testimony taken by J. Secrist, J. P. Lancaster Co., SC.

Later the investigator for the pension writes that if this were true they would have known the applicant's husband about the time of their births - which is correct, they were family members and neighbors in Chesterfield District. Additionally, although Dodge never personally met Rebecca, he did check the 1850 census to find her age given at 53 which he declares proves her to be lying.

Had Mr. Dodge been able to check census ages for Rebecca in 1860 he would have found her to be 75 years; in 1830 between 50 and 60 (born 1870-80) but in 1840, she shows in the 40-50 year category (1790-1800)! All decades average a c1775-85 birth year (close to John's) except the grossly out of range 1850.

Had Dodge met her he would surely have been able to realize she was no where near a 53 year old woman. He likely found the census after the fact and decided to use it to his advantage to deny the application.

Rebecca died after her husband and son Richmond managed their estates for many years before it was partitioned among heirs. [2]
