Biography

Hepzibah Thayer, daughter of William Thayer and Abigail Summer, was born at Mendon, Worcester, Massachusetts Bay. She married Elisha Ballou and had daughters Lucy and Silence.[1]

William Thayer provided for his widowed daughter, Hepzibah, in his will.[1] William was born at Mendon, Massachusetts in 1708. He was the son of Thomas Thayer and Mary Poole, grandson of Ferdinando Thayer and Huldah Hayward. In 1729 William married Abigail Sumner at Mendon.[2] Wilkinson calls him "William Thayer, son of Captain Thomas Thayer, of Mendon, Mass."[1]

Hepzibah's husband Elisha Bayou was born in then Wrentham, afterwards Cumberland, Rhode Island 15 Nov 1726; he married "Hepzibah Thayer, daughter of William (Thomas, Ferdinando, Thomas), mother's maiden name, Abigail Sumner. Hepzibah was born in Mendon, Mass., 13 Dec 1730; married in Mendon 30 Nov 1748."[3]

Elisha Ballou settled on the patrimonial estate of 90 acres, deeded to him by his father Mar 18, 1719. This estate was the easterly section of James Ballou's homestead. Elisha was admitted a freeman of Cumberland in 1752, and was a prominent citizen. He seems to have held a commission in the British service of those times, according to a brief entry in the town records of 1756. He joined the Continental Army when the American Revolution broke out and died in service at Yellow Springs, Pennsylvania in Nov 1777. His estate was administered, and settled under legal authority, by his son-in-law, Israel Wilkinson of Smithfield.[3]

Elisha's widow, Hepzibah, was a sister of Rev. Abner Ballou's wife. She survived him some 27 years and died in Mendon, Mass., Jun 30, 1804, aged 73 yrs. 6 mos. and 18 days.[3]
