Biography

Emma was the second of four children in the family of William and Mathilda Spoerl Theviot.^[1] She grew up on the family farm in Peru township, near Sherrill, Iowa.^[2][3][4][5]

In 1930, in the depression, she went to work in the home of Michael Hardie, the owner of a printing company and his wife Berenice in Julien, Iowa, within the city limits of Dubuque.^[6]She was also employed for a time at Wartburg Seminary in Dubuque.^[7] Emma's first child, a son Merrill, was born in September 1930.

Emma married Peter Haas in her home church in Sherrill, Iowa, when she was 24 years old. Emma and Peter had four children before Emma died at age 32.^[8]

She is buried in Woodbine Cemetery, Woodbine, Illinois.^[9]

Research Notes

Emma is also listed on the 1930 Census in her parents home, but her name is crossed out, perhaps because she was also listed in the home of her employer.^[10]
