Mary Frances was born in 1858, a daughter of John Thornley and his wife Mary [nee Ward] of Middleton near Oldham, Lancashire. During the Census of 1881 Mary and , presumably, her mother were visitors at the home of James and Mary A. Taylor at 35 Linaker Street, North Meols It is interesting to note that the "occupations of both Mr and Mrs Taylor and Mrs Ellen Thornley, a widow aged 62, were described as "Income from Dividends" In1884 Mary Frances Thornley married Edwin Quayle at the Register Office in Prestwich, Lancashire[1]. In 1891 Mary Quayle as she now was, and her infant daughter, Gladys, were living in Addison Terrace, Rusholme[2], Edwin Quayle, Mary's husband and Gladys's father, was staying in an hotel in London, described as a "student of Medicine". Mary and Edwin had four children three girls and one boy - Gladys Evelyn, Enid Lilith, Margery Winifred, and Herbert Edwin all of whom eventually married. Mary Quayle died in1898; her widower remarried two years later.
