Birth
James was born in 1870 in Hanborough, Oxfordshire[1]. He was the son of John Thornton and Fanny Hanks.
Marriage
James Thornton and Lizzie Annie Prior were married after banns at St Mary and St John, Cowley, Oxfordshire on 7th December 1895[2]. They were bachelor and spinster. James was 24, a soldier living in Cowley Barracks and the son of John Thornton (deceased) who was a labourer. Lizzie was 19, living at 14 Dover's Row and the daughter of James Prior who was also a labourer. The witnesses to the marriage were Edward Yates and Frances Ellen Savidge[3].
