Littleton Thornton, born on Oct. 29, 1818 in Pike County, Georgia was the eighth of twelve children born to Wiley Thornton and Elizabeth Johnston. Littleton, known as "Lit", was educated and grew to manhood in Pike County, Georgia. He was dark complexioned, six feet one inch in height, and had black hair and blue eyes. Lit was a farmer like many of his forebears, but he also pursued other endeavors. In 1847 he ran for the office of Sheriff of Pike County, Georgia and was elected for one term in Jan. 1848. First married: Mary Ann Simonton on Nov. 14, 1839 in Pike County, Georgia. [1]
