Nicholas was born February 17, 1849 in Wayne County, Commonwealth of Virginia, CSA and died April 22, 1908 in New Waverly, Cass County, Indiana. He married Mary Jane (Purtee) Toppins daughter of John Purtee and Eva Waldren. She was born June 27, 1858 in Adams County, Ohio. He was the son of John Toppings and Margaret Moore .
Nicholas Toppins was in the Union Militia, Cabell County Scouts. Rank Private, April 10, 1865. He enrolled at Guyandotte for one year.
Nicholas is buried at the New Waverly I.O.O.F. Cemetery. It was opened in 1877. The graves and tombstones of the Voorhis-Grimes Cemetery were transferred to this cemetery. It was moved from its location about one mile east of New Waverly I.O.O.F. when construction of a road took place. Both Nicholas and Essie Walker (his daughter) are buried there.
