Biography
1793 Birth: Mary was born in about February 1793 in Airmyn, Yorkshire. She was the daughter of William Townend and Hannah Mote. She was christened on the 8 February 1793. [1]
1813 Marriage: She married Joseph Whitton (1792–1863) on the 23 December 1813 in Snaith, Yorkshire, England. [2]
Birth of Children:
- Mary Anne Whitton was born in 1818 in Rawcliffe, Yorkshire; [3]
- Hannah Whitton was born 1820 in Rawcliffe By Goole,Yorkshire. [4]
1841 Census: In 1841 the family are living in Chapel Street, Rawcliffe, Yorkshire. Mary is 45 and her husband Joseph 45 is a bricklayer. Also living with them is their daughter Mary 20. They are all born in Yorkshire. [5]
1851 Census: In 1851 the family are living in Chapel Street, Rawcliffe, Yorkshire. Mary is 48, from Rawcliffe and her husband Joseph 59 is a bricklayer and from Rawcliffe. [6]
1861 Census: In 1861 the family are still living in Church Lane, Rawcliffe, Yorkshire. Mary is 68, from Airmyn, Yorkshire and her husband Joseph 69 is a bricklayer and from Rawcliffe. [7]
1863 Death of Husband: Her husband Joseph died in January quarter of 1863. He was 71 years old and they had been married for 49 years. [7]
1871 Census: By 1871, Mary is now living with her daughter, Mary Ann and her family at the Steam Packet Inn in Howden. She is 78 and a widow. Her daughter’s husband William Blyth is a farmer and innkeeper, they have 3 sons Arthur 14, Charles 11 and Benjamin 7. There are 4 servants, a general servant Emma Pounds 16, ferrymen John Blanchard 19 and James Thorpe 31 and a farm servant William Johnson 26. [8]
1878 Death: She died in about June 1878 in Howden, Yorkshire at the age of 85. [9]
1878 Burial: Mary Whitton was buried in St James Churchyard, Rawcliffe, East Riding of Yorkshire Unitary Authority, East Riding of Yorkshire, England. [10]
