Boston Marriages
(NOTE; THIS WILL BE EDITED AND REFINED WHEN RESEARCH COMPLETED, BUT WANT TO DOCUMENT HOW CONCLUSIONS WERE REACHED).
Mary Ann was born about 1814.
I can find no birth or death record for Mary Ann Trask. And yet I know she did exist, based on the following :
Mass, Town and Vital Records, 1620-1988 (Ancestry.com) shows Marriage for John Bowdlear and Mary Ann Trask, Jan 4th, 1835. [2]They were married by Rev. George Washington Blagden, who at that time was the Pastor at the Salem Street Congregational Church in Boston, Mass. (I believe that if one had access to the church records it would shed light on Mary Ann Trask, her parents and possibly her death and birth.)
Martha Bowdlear lists John and Mary Ann Bowdlear on her marriage record: Mass Marriage records for Jan 8th, 1855, Leicester, Mass.
Federal Census for Mass 1855, for Lesicester on Sept 4th, 1855, lists Mary Ann Bowdlear, age 41, living with her husband John Bowdlear, age 42. Also list daughter Martha and the other siblings, as well as Martha Trask, age 66. The census incorrectly lists Martha Trask as Martha Tract.
I believe Martha Trask, maiden name Jewell, to be the mother of Mary Ann Trask, based on the following:
Find a grave for Martha Trask (Jewell) lists her death date as Nov 9, 1855.
Wills and Probate for Leicester, Mass 1855 list Martha Trask as dying 11/9/1855 and further states that her son in law John Bowdlear is requesting to be the administrator. I believe this Martha Trask, and the Martha (Jewell) Trask, wife of Jonathan are the same person.
Find a Grave for Martha and Jonathan Trask does not list Mary Ann as a child of that union. However, I researched census info for Industry, Maine, where the couple lived, and compared that info with the names of children listed on Find a Grave, and found birth records for each child. with the following results:
Find a Grave lists siblings as:
John Ruggles Trask dob: 1836
Adeline dob:1815 died Mar 1820
Levitt D. dob: June 7, 1813
Harriet (Married Asa Brown) dob: 1821
Prentice Mellon dob: May 9, 1829
Robert Porter dob: Oct. 9, 1818
James dob: Dec 1, 1811
Jacob Jewell dob: Feb. 19, 1823
1830 Federal Census, for Industry, Maine: Lists 12 free white people in residence. Of the 12, 2 were age 29 - 44 (these would be the parents, Jonathan and Martha) 10 of the 12 were free white persons under the age of 20: These children would not include Adeline who died prior to the census, and John Ruggles who was born after this census date.
So I have broken down the 10 children under 20 as follows:
2 females, age 5 - 9 as being Harriet(1821) and one unknown female age 5 - 9
1 female, age 15 - 19 as being Mary Ann (based on her age in the 1855 Mass State Census).
2 males, under 5 years as being Prentice (1829) and one unknown male under 5 years
1 male, age 5 - 9 as being Jacob (1823)
2 males age 10 - 14 as being Robert (1818) and one unknown male 10 - 14 year old
2 males age 15 - 19 as being Levitt (1813) AND James (1811)
So based on this, the Find a Grave list of siblings is missing at least 4 children, One who I believe to be Mary Ann, and 3 others as noted above.
After 1855 I find no more public records of Mary Ann (Trask) Bowdlear. So I'm thinking maybe she was put into an asylum or something and died there with no public record of her death. I am going to try to see if asylum death records were published and whether they are available for the years after 1855, Boston, Ma.
ALL RESEARCH ON ABOVE INFO WAS OBTAINED BY ME, USING ANCESTRY.COM
!840 - 1850 research to follow,,,..Jonathan Trask, Head of Household died in 1838. Working on finding where the above listed were in 1840, and looking for marriage and census records etc for the above listed and looking for missing siblings. (6/22/17 JJ)
Representative Citizens of Northern Calif, Published in 1901 by Standard Publishing Company of Chicago, pages 220 - 222: States that Prentice Mellon Trask, born 5/9/1829 in Industry, Maine moved to Calif in 1852, that he was the Child of Jonathan and Martha Trask, that he was one of 14 siblings, that 13 of the children grew to maturity. (This means that Find A Grave for Jonathan and Martha is actually missing 6 children)
Update 7/4/2017- found listing of all 14 kids, There is a Mary C, but she was born in 1825, so unless she got married at 10 and had first child at 11, she isn't my Mary. So possibilities now are narrowing down to I guess almost 0. But still haven't given up, really wish I had access to the church records listed above.
@@@@@ There us a birth record for a Martha Trask, born Sept. 8, 1791, Franklin Industry, Maine. (Maine birth record 1621-1922 Ancestry,Com). This COULDN'T be Martha Jewel listed on the Find a Grave, because her birth name was Martha Trask. So either the Find a Grave just incorrectly used this date of birth for Martha Jewell, or the record was written up after the fact and the person who wrote it up incorrectly used the name Trask instead of Jewel, OR, this Martha Trask is a different person from Martha Jewel. So I'm thinking this Martha Trask with this date of birth and death is my Martha Trask, who had an illegitimate child who she named Mary Trask, born abt. 1814. Still searching......???
Daughter Abby was born on Sept. 19, 1847, [3]She died on May 31, 1903 [4]
