Research Notes

LNAB: Trottier; the surname took on phonetic spelling and pronunciation variations beginning with the 1820 upper Michigan census when English-speaking census takers spelled the surname Truckey. (For a brief insight, see Voyageur Heritage blog post "What's in a Name" which points to Mary's father's surname transition as an example).
  • m. s. seen as 'Truckey' in records of son Paul and daughter Mary.
  • Mary is not found in the 1850 census inferring she died after the birth of her last child (1844) and prior to the census date.
