Biography

Eber was born in 1796 and baptized in Glastonbury on 19 Jun 1796. He is the son of George Tryon and Flora Strickland [1].

His first wife was Maria (possibly Barber), 1804-1832, who died in St. Lawrence County, New York [2]. He next married Amy Barber, 1812-1889, who may have been Maria's sister.

TRYON— In Kingsville, August 24th, Eber Tryon, aged 84 years.[3]

Research Questions

Eber's family was, from records available, more extensive and more complicated than his will suggests. His wife Amy's maiden name was Barber and she was 18 years his junior. On the assumption that he was previously married a grave for Maria (Unknown) Tryon was located. While the memorial and the headstone do not contain much information, they do state Maria was the wife of Eber Tryon and indicate that she died in 1832 at age 28. The 1830 census clearly shows him (male 30 - 39) together with an older man (male 50 - 59), three boys (males under 5, George, Chester, Allen), a female aged 20 - 29 who would be Maria and one female aged 15 - 19 (servant or other relative like sister?).
The 1840 census also clearly shows him (40-49) with two women, one 20-29 and another 30-39. Amy would be 28 so presumably she is the younger. The children are 1m<5 (Norman), 3m5-9 (Unknown plus James and Allen who are 8, 10), 1m10-14 (George and Chester who are 14, 12).
A number of probable and even certain children did not get mentioned in Eber's will, possibly because of some kind of family split:
Son Chester S. Tryon, who died in Chicago in 1914, aged 86, and his death certificate gives Eber Tryon as his father's name and Amy Barber as his mother's name, though Chester was born before Maria died and when Amy would have been only 16 years old, but the reporter would not necessarily be aware of this [8]. His middle name is Smith and in the marriage record of Smith C. Tryon and Joanne Morgan, his parents are Eber and Mary Tryon. Also note that Chester Smith is the name of the husband of two of Eber's sisters, the second after the first died.
A daughter Frances Tryon Whiting, who is the heir-at-law Frances T. Whiting mentioned in connection with the will quoted above, but not named in it.
An eldest son George Adams Tryon, who can be linked indirectly to Eber due to the fact that George's wife Julia Whiting was the sister of Frances Tryon Whiting's husband Samuel Morse Whiting, and that Julia is explicitly named as Julia Tryon on the Whiting family monument.
James W. Tryon is almost certainly another son and, if so, was the last child of Maria who died in 1832 in New York, likely due to complications in childbirth. He was born about 1832 in New York and is found in Ashtabula by 1864 when he married.
The 1850 census clearly has his wife Amy and children Allen, Norman, Francis, Jason, and Charles.
It is interesting to note the inclusion in his will of the phrase concerning his family "my family as now constituted". This suggests that there was some kind of break with several of his older children: George, Chester, Jason, Frances, Allen and Norman.

That's good enough for me to link George in as son to Eber.

I found a FAG memorial for Maria Tryon, wife of Eber, 1804-1832, so the earlier wife named Maria is correct. The headstone gives Eber's name and it is in St Lawrence where we know then lived. However she cannot be the older woman in the 1840 census. I can't find more on her as a Barber or a Tryon.

This all fits to some degree. I found an 1840 census for Eber and there are two adult women, one in her 20s and one in 30s who could be Amy and Maria as sisters. The geneanet link isn't working for me but that is clearly Michael Maranda's work (tropology). There is another George Tryon with wife Julianna and oldest son George A Tryon. There may be some conflation in these profiles.
